I don’t think I have to tell you how important it is to keep your skin healthy. Unless you want to look like you’ve just been to the North pole, you need to put something on your skin to protect it. The question is what? Natural skin products are one choice, but are they healthy and safe? This article will try to answer that question.
Are these products really “natural”?
This is a big misunderstanding when it comes to natural skin products. You see, FDA and other medical regulatory bodies in the world do not clearly define or regulate the term or use of term “natural”. This gives many skin care product manufacturers the freedom to use this word without any repercussion, even though their product might not actually be natural. This gives them the freedom to market these products as “natural” and only have to take them out of sales if a problem occurs or, in other words, if a consumer experiences any health problems while using it. This is why it’s very important to always read the label carefully and also to consult with a dermatologist about the product before using it.
How effective are natural skin care products?
Even if the skin care product you are using is completely natural, it still does not mean that it will be effective. The skin product manufacturers, especially the smaller ones, often have the bad idea that if a certain ingredient is effective if used in one way, it is effective if used in any other way. Also, there is always the question of quantity and is there enough of that ingredient in the whole product. Many manufacturers of natural skin products add just a little of some ingredient, put it on the label and think that will be enough.
Are natural skin products safe?
Although most people automatically think that if a product is labeled as “natural” it has to be safe, this is often not the case. Even if you confirmed that all or most of the ingredients in your skin care product are 100% natural, some of them can still damage your health and cause acne or allergic reactions. Although rare in these products, ingredients such as peppermint and rosemary oil can irritate your skin. This is another reason why you should first check with your dermatologist or a pharmacist before you start using these products. Also, it might be a good idea to first put a little of it on a part of unexposed skin. If everything’s normal, you can continue putting it on, if not, don’t use it anymore.
With so many skin care products being advertised as “natural”, it is very difficult to find the one that is actually good for your skin. As you probably don’t want to get any allergies or acne on your skin, you should first thoughtfully research the product, it’s ingredients and the company that makes it before you start using it.
Skin is practically our first defensive line against outside elements like wind, cold and dirt. How important it is? Well, it covers almost your entire body, so you figure it out. This is the largest organ you have, so if you why would you treat it with any less respect than the other organs?
As your skin is often exposed to the harsh weather conditions, like too much sun, wind or extremely cold temperature, you need to protect it well. This doesn’t mean that you should wear a veil over your face and covering every inch of it. You need to let some of it breathe. A much better way is to use appropriate protection for your skin. Wear a suncream whenever you go outside. It takes just a minute or two to apply it to your exposed skin and I’m sure that you can spare that much time, can you? They don’t only work against UV lighting from the sun outside, but also if you go to the tanning boot.
Another skin care product that you should have at your home is a moisturizer. Why are moisturizers so important? Well, unless you want to have a wrinkled face, then applying a good product will help it regain some of its lost moisture. Most people automatically think that a moisturizer should have as much water as possible, but in truth, those with less water are better for your skin. You should especially apply a moisturizer to your heels, feet, knees, elbows and your extremities, while not so much on your face and torso. How do you recognize a good moisturizer? It should include ingredients such as almonds and avocado, which are very nutritious for your skin.
Of course, we can’t talk about healthy skin without mentioning soap. Although we all use it every day and know how it works, most of us take it for granted and often buy it automatically, without even checking what it contains. Don’t buy soaps based on how nice they smell. Yes, that will make your skin have a fruity flagrance when you get out of a bathtub, but that is just perfume added. Again, don’t use a soap that has too many chemicals in it. And, be careful what you buy, a bad soap can dry your skin.
Finally, it may not be a product, but it’s very important that you eat food which is beneficial for your skin and avoid that which is not. Eat organic fruit, vegetables and fruit are good for everything, including your skin. Yoghurt can be used not only for a face mask but also for drinking. Stop gobbling on that chips during the game. Eat some almonds instead, they are much more healthier. As for the food you should avoid, that would be alcohol on the first place. Also, you may like to eat candy, but your skin disagrees with you. And stop eating white bread, eat whole wheat instead.
Do you love it when your skin is all wrinkled like you are sixty years old? Well, stop treating your skin with so much disrespect and start maintaintaining it for the love of god! It’s really not that hard and it only takes a few minutes of your time each day.
First, you need to find out what type of skin you have. What, did you think that all people have the same skin type? Your skin could be oily, dry or a combination of those. How to recognize what kind of a skin you have? Does it have a greasy shine and looks thick? Than you have oily skin. Do you get rashes every time you wear a scarf or try a new cream? That’s a sensitive skin. Greasy nose, chin and forehead skin, but everything else okay? Combination skin.
Now that you know the type of your skin, you need to buy a good soap and moisturizer. How to chose a soap. It’s pretty easy, what I do is read the label and if I find too much scientific words in it, I avoid it. You should wash the skin every day, at least 2 times with a little soap/cleanser. When using moisturizer, don’t be afraid to put a little more. Washing your face with just water is also a good way to keep it healthy. Do this in the morning and the evening. Of course, wash your hands before you wash the face or you’ll spread bacteria from them to the face.
You should treat your skin once every week. Apply a face mask or steam you skin. Just make sure that whatever you are using is appropriate for your skin type. Don’t peel your skin. Instead of doing that, use a tea oil. Yoghurt is another good way to clear it and it will treat your skin gently. Do this especially if you have dry skin. If you really have problems with your skin, then it’s time for the big guns, or the retinol cream (a derivative of vitamin A) and some glycolic peels. Most of the time, however, water, moisturizer and a good face mask will do the trick.
It’s also important what you eat. Your skin will not appreciate alcohol, candy, salt and white bread, so avoid these as much as you can, although, obviously you can’t completely remove them from your diet. Okay, so what’s a good food for skin? That would be dairy products, like yoghurt, fish (salmon in particular), blueberries (I really love those) and almonds (great snack, buy the way). Of course, your skin needs to be well hydrated, so drink plenty of liquids, but most of all, just regular water. No matter how much moisturizer you use, it will show on your skin if you’re dehydrated.
Finally, don’t forget to protect your skin when you go out on sun. A good sun cream is not just for when you go to the beach and should be used even if you have darker skin.
